Comparison between Optic Flow Fields and Response
نویسندگان
چکیده
Coordination of locomotion in a complex environment requires information about the instantaneous self-motion. Visually oriented animals, including man, may exploit ‘optic flow’ that is generated in the eyes when moving through structured surroundings. Optic flow fields are composed of local velocity vectors. They depend upon a set of motion parameters: (i) direction of gaze, (ii) the rotatory and (iii) the translatory component of the instantaneous seif-motion; the translatory component depends additionally on the distance between visual objects and the observer (Koenderink, 1987).

Adaptation of PMLS neurons to prolonged optic flow stimuli.
Changes in neuronal responses during and after adaptation to prolonged optic flow stimulation were investigated by extracellular single-unit recording in the posteromedial lateral suprasylvian area (PMLS) of the cat. In comparison with translation stimuli, the complex optic flow patterns (radiation and rotation) produced more pronounced adaptation and after-effects by inducing larger response r...
متن کاملSensitivity of MST neurons to optic flow stimuli. II. Mechanisms of response selectivity revealed by small-field stimuli.
1. In these experiments we examined the receptive field mechanisms that support the optic flow field selective responses of neurons in the dorsomedial region of the medial superior temporal area (MSTd). Our experiments tested the predictions of two hypotheses of optic flow field selectivity. The direction mosaic hypothesis states that these receptive fields contain a set of planar direction-sel...
متن کاملBinocular contributions to optic flow processing in the fly visual system.
Integrating binocular motion information tunes wide-field direction-selective neurons in the fly optic lobe to respond preferentially to specific optic flow fields. This is shown by measuring the local preferred directions (LPDs) and local motion sensitivities (LMSs) at many positions within the receptive fields of three types of anatomically identifiable lobula plate tangential neurons: the th...
متن کاملTurbulent Drag Reduction by Spanwise Wall Oscillations
The objective of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of wall oscillation as a control scheme of drag reduction. Two flow configurations are considered: constant flow rate and constant mean pressure gradient. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved using Fourier-Chebyshev spectral methods and the oscillation in sinusoidal form is enforced on the walls through boundary conditions for the sp...
متن کاملRobustness of the tuning of fly visual interneurons to rotatory optic flow.
The sophisticated receptive field organization of motion-sensitive tangential cells in the visual system of the blowfly Calliphora vicina matches the structure of particular optic flow fields. Hypotheses on the tuning of particular tangential cells to rotatory self-motion are based on local motion measurements. So far, tangential cells have never been tested with global optic flow stimuli. Ther...
